Local Cupcake Shop Owner, Mother of Two Killed in Tragic Auburn Crash
AUBURN, Ala. — A beloved local business owner, mother, and former educator was killed Tuesday morning in a devastating crash involving a school bus on East University Drive.
The collision occurred around 8:00 a.m. CST at the intersection of East University Drive and Alfa Court, according to the Auburn Police Department. Authorities say the crash involved a passenger vehicle and a school bus. No children or bus occupants were injured.
Lee County Coroner Daniel Sexton confirmed that Jennifer Merwin Cooper, 42, was pronounced dead at 8:09 a.m. due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Cooper was known throughout the Auburn–Opelika and Columbus communities as the owner of GiGi’s Cupcakes in Opelika, Alabama, and Columbus, Georgia. She was also a mother of two, a former seventh-grade science teacher at Fort Payne City Schools, and the wife of Patrick Cooper. Friends, customers, and community members have already begun sharing condolences and memories of her kindness, warmth, and community spirit.
Her body will be transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for a postmortem examination, Sexton said.
Investigation Underway
The Auburn Police Department Traffic Homicide Unit responded to the scene and has launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“The case remains active while investigators review all evidence and data available,” police said in a statement.

As friends, family, and community members grapple with this heartbreaking loss, many are sharing tributes honoring Cooper’s generosity, work ethic, and the joy she brought to those around her.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
